Tying flies involves a lot of intense focussing and concentration which quickly adds up to eye strain.
In their mid-40's, most peoples eye muscles (and thus lenses) begin to relax and this is why you often need to start using 'reading glasses'
This often manifests itself by your focus beginning to 'wander'.. and having an UNCLUTTERED sight area behind the fly you are trying to tie or dress will make a HUGE difference.
Good overhead lighting from say, an anglepoise lamp or modern LED lamp, will also make the job a lot easier and more comfortable.
